OfflineMode – Another Wordpress Plugin I Wrote

I’ve written a plugin for Wordpress that will show visitor a under construction splash page when you are doing some maintenance or turning your blog offline just as I’ve promised. http://blog.zorex.info/?p=111

This plugin wont make your maintaining job easier, but it will help you to convey the message that you are maintaining your blog without you taking down your blog completely.

You can download the plugin from this page. Hope you all like it. ;D

You may leave comment and suggestion here.

John @ Nov 21 2008 12:08:06 AM

Hi,
thanks for the plugin! It really works.
I’d though like to have the ability to see
the content as an admin, which I can’t.
I also don’t understand how I can make
my own splash page…

zorex @ Nov 21 2008 01:13:05 AM

@John
I’ll take note of that. Next release, admin will be able to see the website.

I’ll post a tutorial on making your own splash page when I’m free

Cool… this is an interesting plugin and I hv been looking for this such that I do not need to tear down my blog when I am making changes to it… ;-)

Lionel Chollet @ Dec 15 2008 10:43:09 PM

It would be interesting to be able to set an estimated offline duration, and the ticker would display the estimated remaining offline time, instead of the time elapsed since the site has been offline.

Jay @ Dec 21 2008 10:17:15 PM

I’ll download it but only if you find a way to allow the admin section, and with the estimated remaining offline time. That will be the perfect plugin for maintenance !

zorex @ Dec 22 2008 12:54:34 AM

Its impossible to estimate how much time everyone need to complete their maintenance. However, they plugin will show how long you’ve taken your blog down

David Dyer-Bennet @ Dec 27 2008 02:05:09 AM

I’ve got my wordpress blog configured so that the homepage is the siteroot (using .htaccess to redirect root references down to the wordpress directory, as explained in the wordpress docs). And your offline mode plugin doesn’t tell visitors to the site root that I’m down; it only gives me the offline splash page (the default one is a very nice design, by the way) when I try to go below the blog homepage.

David Dyer-Bennet @ Dec 27 2008 02:12:04 AM

Oh, and about the timer — what I\’d like is to specify in configuration when I think I\’ll be done, and have that (or a countdown to that) displayed.

Reinhardt @ Feb 05 2009 07:09:35 PM

I need help with this plugin.

I cannot edit my posts when the offline mode is activated!

Please assist.
Reinhardt

zorex @ Feb 05 2009 09:48:36 PM

I’ll release new updates soon to fix the problem regarding admin unable to view the blog.

Reinhardt @ Feb 06 2009 10:18:13 PM

Hey Zorex

Do you know when this release will be out?
I’m kinda in a bind here, all I need to do is edit posts but it wont allow me??

Regards,
Reinhardt

JoeHark @ Feb 07 2009 05:30:55 AM

Sorry for being dumb but that\’s what is. The instructions say, \"Login to your admin CP and enable \"OfflineMode\" through plugin tab\" – but literal-minded me goes to the Dashboard (is that what you mean by admin CP? If not, where is the admin CP?), then to the PlugIn page and see no words such as \"enable\" or any tab labeled \"enable.\" So I started guessing.

I went to the dashboard and activated the plugin by clicking on Activate. So if that what the instructions meant, that\’s what I did. But when I returned to the home page, there is no splash page. The site is visible.

What is it I am supposed to be doing that I\’m am not?

zorex @ Feb 07 2009 06:47:53 PM

@Reinhardt: I’ll try to release as soon as I got time. For now, you can edit your post through the admin page.

@JoeHark: You’ve just completed the 1st step. After enable the plugin, go to ’settings’ where you will see new tab call ‘OfflineMode Settings’. To put your website/blog in maintenance mode, just check the enable OfflineMode checkbox.

nice idea, thanks for it.

Inchirieri Masini @ Mar 15 2009 07:04:20 PM

The ideea is great. You can also ad something like a trail in % which shows how much is elapsed or how much time remains until next update. Another ideea would be to make it as the fuel gauge from a car.

Allen Oz @ Mar 18 2009 08:23:03 AM

I just used your plugin on my site and now it is stuck in Under Construction mode. I deactivated and deleted the file but I’m still seeing the splash page. Can you please help?

zorex @ Jun 01 2009 10:42:25 PM

There isn’t any problem with it. You see the splash page simply because your browser cache the page. Try to press CTRL + F5 to refresh your page and everything should be ok

Chris Gallagher @ Nov 03 2009 08:41:50 PM

Great Plugin – it would be even better if you can edit and preview while in offline mode – as many of my clients want to see changes to the site as it is being developed. I can build on localhost but then the changes i need to make to put it online for preview make for a lot of extra work. Any idea when you may be adding the functionality for editing? Cheers for the plugin anyway :) .

Chris Gallagher @ Nov 03 2009 08:55:28 PM

I did try to add a logo by adding this div in : <div><img src=\"data: http://www.convey2day.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/decision2day-logo.jpg\"></div> but it didnt work with or without the data bit – will you be putting instructions up for things like this?

zorex @ Nov 04 2009 01:30:19 PM

Yea… I will after I release a new version for it. Meanwhile, anyone is welcome to post any guide in making their own splash page.

Ryan @ Nov 10 2009 09:40:02 PM

Hi Zorex

I was just wondering.
I have the offline plugin which I used last year.
I was wondering if the new version supports the offline view only for admin?

I mean…I as admin wants to see the changes on my site, but I don’t want other visitors to see it.

I know you mentioned it will be available in the new one. It’s been like year now so I was just popping in to see if it’s available yet?

Regards
Ryan

zorex @ Nov 11 2009 03:40:58 PM

Yea, I did mention about it.. However I dun have time to write the new version yet. So currently the project is on halt. Sorry…

Hi,

I just downloaded your plugin, it works great. I have seen that many people commented about the missing \\&quot;feature\\&quot; to let admins see the blog and others not.

To get this functionality add the following line first in the function displaySplash() in the file OfflineMode.php:
if (current_user_can(\\\’edit_users\\\’)) return;
